Javelins have a long history as a ranged weapon because they are simple to make. You can carve almost any stick into a usable weapon, as the weight and length are not always set in stone, and can be up to the maker. Most javelins usually only have a sharpened end to them, but if you can work metal or stone, or you happen upon a head or tip, one can be fastened to any javelin.
Since javelins are made out of wood and are thrown weapons, if handled improperly, they can be damaged and/or worn out quicker than if used by a skilled person.
